Edward Holroyd Pearce, Baron Pearce, RBA, PC (1901-1990)

Holroyd Pearce was an eminent High Court Judge who was also a successful artist.  Having contracted tuberculosis as a young barrister, he was sent to convalesce in Switzerland and it was there in the 1930s that he started to paint in earnest, falling in love with the mountain scenery.  In 1927 he married Erica Priestman, daughter of the artist Bertram Priestman.  Bertram Priestman and Holroyd Pearce often went on painting trips together, often accompanied by their friend Edward Seago.

Holroyd Pearce exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy, and held several one man shows, sometimes exhibiting alongside his wife Erica, who was a talented watercolourist.  He liked to work ‘en plein air’ and this little seascape is a lovely example of his work with its vibrant colours and fluidly applied paint
