Innes was a self-taught artist who exhibited at the Royal Academy, New England Arts Club, and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He first exhibited his work during the Second World War when he served in the Royal Air Force. He painted mainly in pastels and was a member of the Pastel Society, in which he was held in high esteem. This view of the Fowey river is in oil paint and shows that Innes was equally confident in this medium, deftly capturing the play of the sunlight on the water.
