Krämer was an Austrian artist born in Vienna. He studied at the Vienna School of Fine Arts and also in Germany. He later emigrated to the UK and during World War II he taught painting at King’s College, Durham University, which was actually based in Newcastle. Little is known about his life, but he did exhibit at the Royal Academy, and the Tate Gallery holds one of his pictures. His work is often mistaken for the work of Jacob Kramer, a Ukrainian born artist who also worked in the north of England.
Fritz Krämer is probably best known for his sensitive depictions of children, but this interesting painting shows he was very much influenced by modernism, the quirky perspective, vivid colours and strong lines bring to mind artists such as Van Gogh and de Vlaminck. This is a view of the Pont Marie, one of the oldest bridges in Paris which connects Île Saint-Louis to the Right Bank. Pont Louis Phillipe is visible under one of the arches.
