Robert Fowler was a Scottish artist, born in Fife, although he moved to Liverpool at a young age. He studied at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and South Kensington Schools in London but returned to Liverpool setting up a studio on Castle street, which became a focus for the city’s artistic life. Later, in 1903, he returned to London, keeping a studio in Chelsea. He exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy and the Grosvenor Galleries and also achieved recognition in Paris and Munich.
He painted in a classical style, very much influenced by artists such as Albert Moore and Frederic Leighton, and he often drew upon mythological scenes. Due to ill health he was often sent for convalescence to Llandudno in Wales and painted many landscapes of the surrounding area. This is a view over the River Mawddach in Snowdonia, looking towards Cader Idris, painted in an impressionistic and fluid style.
