Arthur Gilbert (1819-1895)

Arthur Gilbert (1819-1895)

Gilbert, born Arthur Gilbert Frederick Williams,  was a Victorian artist born into the talented ‘Williams family of painters’ in London. His father and five brothers were all artists, and Gilbert changed his name from Williams in order to differentiate himself.  He had no formal training and was taught by his father.

He is best known for his large scale classical landscapes and moonlight scenes.  This little gem of a painting bears a striking resemblance to the Pre-Raphaelite style, characterised by its meticulous detail and radiant luminosity.  Gilbert would have been aware of the Pre-Raphaelites as the movement started to take off in London in the 1850s and may well have been influenced by their work and their ‘truth to nature’ mentality.
