The Oberland from Gemmi Pass

Oil on board; inscribed verso ‘Bernese Oberland from the back/ Gemmi Pass/ Evening/ Chas..D… (illegible) Aug 1899’; 6 x 9 inches

£ 1, 200

A sensitive little plein-air sketch by an accomplished hand, there is a pencil inscription on the back which is almost indecipherable, although the location can be read and the name ‘Chas. D…’. The Gemmi Pass is an ancient pass in Switzerland, connecting Leukerbad and Kandersteg, it attracted many artists, including Picasso, for its dramatic terrain.
